Last week I chatted about my #SewingTop5 Top 5 hits and had such fun going back through all my makes for the year and figuring out my favorites! In that process, also was able to identify some handmades that just didn’t get the wear they should have for one way or another. To read about the hits first, click here – and now onto the misses.

I ranked my hits in favorites order but these ones are just five misses – in no particular order. Also, all of these misses are no fault of the pattern – but more just that the pattern wasn’t the best fit for me or I chose the wrong fabric.

One | Penelope Peplum

I made the Penelope Peplum back in May and while it has gotten some wear, I think it has some inherent flaws that stops me from grabbing it from time to time. I decided to lengthen it but instead of lengthening the skirt, I lengthened the bodice and I think it just hits me at the wrong spot. Also, the instructions has you turn under the neckline, but I don’t think that’s my cleanest finish. It ended up a little wonky. I would absolutely make another one – but lengthening the skirt + adding a neckband or neck binding.

Two | My First Kalle Shirt

Unfortunately, I think this was just an instance of bad fabric choice + not the best fit for me for my first Kalle. I used a tencel twill which just grew and grew and the back is SO long. Also, the tencel didn’t do so great with the band collar. All this being said – I do think this pattern and I recovered with my post on Monday. My blue oxford version makes my heart sing!

Three | Hadley Top

When the Hadley Top first came out I really loved the sleeveless version. I think unfortunately the v-neck is way too low for my comfort. I wore it and spent the whole day covering my chest – not the best feeling! Since making it, I really have been loving people’s long sleeve versions – Tiahna’s versions are amazing! So I think I need to try out the long sleeve crew neck version – the V is just not for me.

Four | Phinney Ridge Cardigan

Another example of wrong fabric = not great garment. I used a really really drapey knit for this Phinney Ridge cardigan and it just slides off my shoulder and makes me constantly pull up the sleeves. I am a huge cardigan fan – in fact I wear one almost every single day – but I think that this cardigan would look awesome in a more stable knit like a french terry. I saw Indu’s the other day and it reminded me I have to give this pattern another go!

Five | Zadie Dress

I always LOVE Tilly and the Buttons patterns on others – but I don’t think they work for my body type. I sewed up the Zadie last winter and something about the shape just isn’t super flattering on me. I really thought I would get another wear out of it, but every time I went to put it on I didn’t love it and ended up taking it off.

It’s sad when something that you worked hard on doesn’t come to be what you hoped it was, but hey – that’s just part of the process right? What were some garments you made that just didn’t turn out as planned?
