I am so excited to be back and sewing again! If you have been following along on Instagram, my husband and I have been in the process (long long process) of moving over the past month or so. We’re finally in our new townhouse and getting all settled and after a trip to IKEA last weekend, my sewing room is up and running!
With all the heat this past week or so here in Northern Virginia, I couldn’t imagine making pants or even a top to wear with pants – I decided to sew up a dress and the Eve Dress was a perfect fit!
The Pattern and The Dress
I am always such a fan of the Sew Over It designs – they are so classically feminine with a contemporary retro feel (does that even make sense, or is that an oxymoron??) I remember admiring the Eve Dress when it came out a while ago, but never had an occasion to make it – a wedding to attend and a desire for a new dress was the perfect occasion.
The Eve Dress is a wrap dress with two views that really do create two different looks. Variation 1 (which I made) is described on the Sew Over It website as the ultimate summer wedding outfit (what a perfect description). It has a dipped hem, flutter sleeves and a beautiful silhouette. Variation 2 is a more contemporary silhouette, with narrow elbow length sleeves and a level knee-length hem. Both variations have a gathered yoke, wrap over front and a long tie closure.
I really do love wrap dresses – they are flattering and easy to wear. I did have one fitting problem with the Eve Dress. I can’t seem to get the right side of the wrap to lay flat. I ended up taking another 3/8″ up where the yoke meets the bodice, but it doesn’t seem to be solving the problem. If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix the problem, please let me know! I seem to get it on most wrap dresses which I think is due to being smaller on one side than the other, but there has to be a fix out there somewhere!
The Fabric
Shortly after I made my Dove Blouse out of fabric from Alyssa May Design, I ordered more of her beautiful bubble crepe fabric. This fabric is amazing for so many reasons – it doesn’t wrinkle so it’s great for travel, it gives you the flowy-ness of rayon without the shiftyness and trouble sewing with it and it comes in beautiful patterns. After seeing Meg’s Darling Range Dress, I immediately wanted to make a dress in the fabric.
Also this dress is SO cool in the summer heat. The fabric is just so lightweight and easy to wear. It also has a very slight stretch to it. It’s also perfect for travel because it doesn’t really wrinkle! I am in love with Alyssa’s fabric in her shop – it’s so perfect for dresses and drapey blouses.
